Recent changes in the global economy and governmental policies (such as the introduction of fees and the drive for all young people to be in education or training) have led to a revolution in modern Higher Education. Current student cohorts are substantially larger, more diverse, and often more consumer-focused. For these reasons, modern teaching methods must be accessible to large numbers of students whilst still retaining their maximum learning capabilities. This workshop will explore some of the problems and solutions associated with teaching large groups.

The workshop will begin with a short presentation outlining three teaching methods appropriate for working with large groups. Dr Fay Short will deliver this presentation in collaboration with one of our current students, in order to ensure that the audience is presented with both the lecturer and student perspective for each method.

After the presentation, the workshop will invite attendees to engage in a round-table discussion to outline the primary problems associated with teaching larger groups and establish some potential solutions to these problems.
