In a world of economic instability and global anxiety, our students are often exposed to high levels of stress in their academic and personal lives. We are educators who intersect the lives of these young people at a critical time in their
development towards adulthood, and this means that we have an obligation to support both their academic and personal growth. Although a tutor is not expected to be a counsellor, the incorporation of key counselling skills into our interactions can considerably enhance pastoral care in education. As argued by Carl Rogers (1957), an educator who can offer unconditional positive regard for the learner and empathy with the position of the learner will be more effective in connecting with this learner, encouraging him or her to develop personally and academically, and supporting intellectually advancement. This keynote will demonstrate how core skills from the field of counselling can be applied in further education. Dr Short will present ten active listening skills and highlight how tutors can incorporate these skills into their daily interactions with students to enhance learning and support personal development.
